The Sierra Club Iowa Chapter recently hosted a statewide training session where organizers noted that over a dozen Iowa communities have already implemented data center ordinances or temporary moratoriums. Jo Ann Beer, Mayor of Fairfax, emphasized the importance of enacting these regulations early to ensure developers comply with local standards for issues like special lighting, noise controls, and water consumption.
Speakers at the training warned that communities have significantly less leverage to influence the construction and operational details of data centers once a proposal has been formally introduced. To aid local leaders in this process, a new free tool developed by groups at the University of Iowa compiles crucial information on energy and water usage, taxation, land use, and community priorities, helping them make informed decisions before considering new ordinances or proposals.
