Water levels at Carvins Cove, the Roanoke Valley's main water source, are low due to drought but remain higher than previous crisis years, alleviating immediate panic. Public concern persists regarding a Google data center in Botetourt County, which has contracted for 2 million gallons of water daily, though it now plans to use less due to air cooling. This shift reduces water use but increases electricity demand on a largely coal-powered grid, raising environmental trade-off questions.
Despite visual evidence of receding shorelines at Carvins Cove, the Roanoke Valley's primary water source, current water levels are significantly higher than during the severe droughts of 1999 and 2002. This assessment comes from data maintained by the Western Virginia Water Authority, which manages a diversified water system for the valley, including Carvins Cove, Spring Hollow, and various wells.
Public "consternation" exists over a Google data center project in Botetourt County, particularly regarding its water demands. Google has contracted for 2 million gallons of water daily, though it recently revised its cooling plans to use air cooling, reducing its projected need to 1.2 million gallons per day. This amount is less than what the offline Falling Creek reservoir could provide. Historically, the Roanoke Valley uses significantly less water now than two decades ago due to increased water efficiency in appliances.
However, the shift to air cooling means the Google facility will consume more electricity. While Google may purchase renewable energy offsets, the local Appalachian Power grid is 65% coal-powered. This presents an environmental trade-off, prompting questions about whether it is better to conserve water at the expense of increased carbon emissions.
