State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) has called for a cautious and deliberate approach to data center development in Alabama, despite U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) championing new facilities. Orr's comments on WVNN’s “The Dale Jackson Show” come as many cities across Alabama have implemented temporary moratoriums on data center construction. He acknowledged the need for data centers but voiced significant concerns from Alabamians regarding potential increases in electricity rates due to the high power usage of these facilities, particularly those involved in cryptocurrency mining.
Orr also expressed worry that the substantial energy demands of data centers could hinder other economic development projects in the state by straining the power supply. He referenced warnings that companies might be told there isn't enough power for their projects if data center growth is unchecked. The debate also involves opposition from Democrats, with U.S. Rep Terri Sewell co-sponsoring a bill to temporarily ban data centers nationwide. While acknowledging some existing data centers in North Alabama are beneficial, Orr stressed the importance of a thoughtful evaluation process for future projects.
