The Sangamon County Board has tabled a vote on a proposed data center development by CyrusOne in southern Sangamon County. The 15-13 vote to postpone the matter followed more than three hours of debate, during which the board initially voted down the same motion before reconsidering.
The proposed data center is a contentious issue, with proponents touting its economic benefits and opponents raising significant environmental concerns, including noise pollution. Bradd Hout of CyrusOne stated that the site was intentionally chosen to be a half-mile from any occupied residences to mitigate potential issues, referencing a data center in Aurora, Illinois, as an example of their holdings.
However, most public speakers at the meeting expressed opposition to the project. Opponent Thomas Davis invoked the Illinois Constitution, emphasizing the right to a healthful environment and the priority of health, safety, and welfare in state zoning laws. CyrusOne officials did not provide immediate comment after the meeting.
