Texas lawmakers are set to review the impact of data centers on the state's economy, workforce, communities, and power grid. This follows Governor Greg Abbott's directive to pause approvals for new data centers seeking to connect to the state's power grid, while an audit of 250-300 projects is conducted by ERCOT.

Texas lawmakers are scheduled to meet this Wednesday to scrutinize the impact of data centers across the state. The review will specifically address their effects on the Texas economy, workforce, local communities, and the reliability of the state's power grid.

This legislative action comes on the heels of Governor Greg Abbott's recent order to audit projects seeking connection to the state's power grid, effectively pausing approvals for new data centers. ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, indicated it had already planned to audit several data center projects, but the Governor's directive has altered their timeline, extending the review process for several months. Final approval for projects to connect to the grid will be withheld until this audit, which will cover approximately 250 to 300 projects, primarily data centers, is complete.

ERCOT officials stated that the audit will concentrate on projects included in its "new batch zero study," which is the established procedure for evaluating large-scale projects seeking connection to the Texas grid. ERCOT is expected to provide an update on its timeline to the Public Utility Commission (PUC) this Thursday. Regulators at the PUC will also deliberate on the process for implementing Governor Abbott's directive.
