Geronimo Power, a Minnesota-based developer, has proposed a new data center project in eastern Jasper County, Missouri, to be located between Sarcoxie and La Russell. The plan includes a 150-megawatt solar farm to primarily self-power the data center, situated near the Liberty Energy Center. This proposal has generated significant controversy among local residents.
Many residents have voiced strong opposition, citing concerns that the development would infringe on their rural lifestyle due to the potential for multiple data centers in a small radius. Specific complaints revolve around increased water use, which residents worry will deplete local well water tables, as well as noise and light pollution. An online petition against the project has gathered nearly 1,900 signatures.
Despite the local opposition, Jasper County lacks independent regulatory authority over such projects. Geronimo Power, however, has stated its commitment to transparency and being a "good neighbor." The company's plans include closed-loop water systems to minimize water usage and a commitment to complying with state and federal air quality regulations. The project is currently in its proposal stage.
