Two-day event focused on data center impact kicks off Saturday in Eau Claire
An event is being held in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, organized by a Menomonie resident, to discuss the impacts of data centers. This follows the pause of a proposed $1.6 billion data center project in Dunn County and the passage of a new zoning ordinance by a local city to regulate future projects, addressing concerns about electricity, water, noise, and light pollution.
A two-day event focused on data center impacts is scheduled to begin Saturday in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Organized by Menomonie resident Blaine Halverson, the gathering aims to foster transparency and ensure technology serves the community, with comedian Charlie Berens headlining alongside groups like Great Lakes Neighbors United and GrassRoots Organizing Western Wisconsin (GROWW).
The event follows the indefinite pause of a proposed $1.6 billion data center project in Dunn County, spearheaded by developer Balloonist LLC, which has not publicly commented on the venture. Residents of Menomonie have expressed significant concerns regarding the project's potential electricity and water usage, as well as light and noise pollution. In response to these community concerns, the city (likely Menomonie or a municipality within Dunn County) has since adopted a new zoning ordinance that establishes "guardrails" for future data center developments. Halverson anticipates around 1,000 attendees, hoping the event will initiate dialogue and encourage residents to engage constructively with local council members.
