The rising demand for computer components like RAM and SSDs from AI data centers is causing prices to surge and supply shortages for consumer buyers. Data centers are prioritizing the purchase of these components, making it difficult for regular computer enthusiasts and the average consumer to find and afford parts for upgrades and repairs.

The rising demand for AI data centers in the US is causing a shortage and price hikes in key computer components like RAM and solid-state drives (SSDs). Riley Sharber, manager of Sour Tech, says data centers have purchased the entire production of these chips through 2026, leaving consumers to pay over 300% more for replacements. Some parts like SSDs are completely sold out, forcing consumers and repair shops to scramble. Texas A&M professor Patrick Neff says computer enthusiasts are among the most affected, with the cost to build a high-end PC rising from $4,000 to over $5,000 in just two years. Manufacturers are responding by reducing RAM in new computers or raising prices, though larger companies like Apple and Dell are less impacted. Experts recommend consumers buy pre-built computers rather than build their own to avoid the shortages and price increases.
