Council to vote on data center moratorium Thursday
The Memphis City Council will resume consideration of a proposed data center moratorium on Thursday after protests and fights abruptly halted Tuesday’s meeting. More than 100 people attended the meeting, and council members said the vote would proceed following community backlash over the postponement.
The Memphis City Council is scheduled to resume its discussion and vote on a proposed data center moratorium Thursday, after protests and physical altercations forced an abrupt end to Tuesday’s meeting. The resumed session will include a committee meeting and planning session before the regular council meeting continues.
Council member Jana Swearengen-Washington called for calm while emphasizing that residents should be able to challenge the council. Five council members opposed postponing the vote, and JB Smiley Jr. said the decision to proceed Thursday followed community backlash. Memphis police responded to a fight at City Hall, but no arrests or injuries were reported.
