Rapids planning commission recommends denial of data center permit

The Wisconsin Rapids Planning Commission voted to deny a conditional use permit for the PNK Group's proposed data center at the former Rapids Mill site. This decision marks a significant setback for the developer and a victory for local opposition. The meeting opened with a city staff recommendation to deny the permit, citing an incomplete and late application from PNK Group.

During public comment, opinions were divided. While some, including union representatives, advocated for the data center if it could comply with city ordinances, a majority, including Republican State Representative Scott Krug, spoke against the project. Krug emphasized that opposition crossed party lines, stating the project was not suitable for the area at this time. The commission ultimately voted seven to zero to deny the permit, a decision met with applause from many in attendance.

Despite the planning commission's denial, the matter is not definitively closed. The denial still requires approval from the Wisconsin Rapids Common Council, and the meeting for this vote has not yet been scheduled. PNK Group released a statement asserting that the planning commission's decision does not alter their commitment to the Wisconsin Rapids project, and the local ordinance allows them to resubmit their application.

Adding another layer of complexity, a public hearing is scheduled for October 5th to discuss a potential moratorium on data center development in Wisconsin Rapids. If the Common Council approves this moratorium before PNK Group can resubmit their application, it could significantly impact the future of the proposed data center project.
