NV Energy, a Nevada utility, will cease supplying power to Lake Tahoe customers served by California's Liberty Utilities by May 2027, citing its own "unprecedented" resource needs driven by data centers. Liberty Utilities must now secure alternative power sources for 75% of its Lake Tahoe customer base. The utility is seeking approval from California regulators for a process to replace this power.

Nevada-based utility NV Energy is set to terminate its power supply contract with Liberty Utilities, which serves 49,000 customers in the Lake Tahoe region, by May 2027. NV Energy cited its "own resource needs" and "unprecedented" demand, attributing a significant portion of this surge to data centers, as explained by its director of business development at a regional event. Liberty Utilities, a California investor-owned power company whose territory spans the California-Nevada border and is connected to Nevada's energy market, currently sources 75% of its power from NV Energy. President Eric Schwarzrock stated that Liberty's goal is to meet California's renewable requirements affordably. Liberty has informed the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) of the change and is seeking approval for a process to procure replacement power, with a focus on low-cost options and meeting renewable energy mandates.
