Borough approves data center ordinance addition

The Northampton Borough Council approved a request to advertise Ordinance 1244, which seeks to amend the borough's zoning ordinance by defining and adding specific requirements for data centers and their accessory uses. This initiative comes amidst a reported backlash against new data center construction across the U.S., with concerns centered on high utility bills, environmental damage, and resource strain.
Councilwoman Judy Haldeman voiced concerns regarding data centers' reported electricity consumption. Solicitor Stephanie Steward noted that the River Central Multimunicipal Comprehensive Plan consortium, comprising Northampton, East Allen Township, Hanover Township (Lehigh County), North Catasauqua, and Catasauqua, will collaborate to address the potential impacts of data center development within their respective municipalities.
