Village of Pioneer fish farm project could turn into data center project
A former fish farm site in Pioneer, Ohio, with significant existing infrastructure, is now being considered as a potential location for a data center. A third-party company has inquired about the site's electricity capabilities. The Village of Pioneer is open to the idea, provided it meets zoning regulations and offers benefits to the community.
The probability of a giant fish farm project by AquaBounty in the Village of Pioneer, Williams County, Ohio, is now looking less likely. With approximately $100 million worth of infrastructure already in place for the salmon farm, there is now a new study underway to see what could take its place, with indications pointing to a potential data center.
A third-party company has reportedly approached the Village of Pioneer administrator to study the site's electricity capabilities, signaling interest in a project within the "rapidly expanding power generation and digital infrastructure sectors." While Pioneer Mayor Kids acknowledges the speculation about a data center, he states that the village is watching any potential sale or new development closely. He emphasized that any project, if it meets existing zoning regulations and brings "huge benefits" in terms of resources to the school and village, would be welcomed.
Pioneer operates as a public power town, buying electricity wholesale and selling it to the community. A large operation like a data center would mean substantial revenue for the village. The next step involves waiting for the consultant to complete the energy study to determine the property's power handling capacity, which will be crucial in determining its future use.
