Grand Junction City Council advances one-year moratorium on large data centers
The Grand Junction City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance proposing a one-year moratorium on new data centers requiring at least one megawatt of electricity. A public hearing and final vote are scheduled for Oct. 21, while city staff develop zoning and other regulations for the industry.
The Grand Junction City Council advanced a proposed one-year moratorium on new large-scale data centers within city limits by approving the ordinance’s first reading. The pause would apply to applications for facilities requiring at least one megawatt of electricity and would give city staff time to establish zoning districts, development standards and other regulations.
The moratorium is not yet final. The council plans to hold a public hearing and conduct a final vote on Oct. 21; if approved, the ordinance would take effect 30 days after final approval and publication. Grand Junction is coordinating its efforts with Mesa County, which approved a separate temporary data center moratorium the previous month.
