During a recent Vermillion County Commissioners meeting, residents vocalized significant concerns regarding a proposed data center development within the county. The public comment period, lasting three hours, highlighted worries ranging from potential noise and water pollution to increased energy costs and job impacts. Residents emphasized the need for robust regulations to manage data center development.

In response to the community's strong feedback, the Vermillion County Commissioners decided to dismiss the existing ordinance and resolution pertaining to data centers. They recommended the creation of a new, more comprehensive regulatory framework. Furthermore, the commissioners proposed forming a committee to assist in developing this new ordinance, including a public member. A resident, who expressed gratitude for the community's trust, volunteered to serve on this committee, aiming to ensure the new ordinance adequately protects the community.

The discussion also touched upon the potential implementation of a moratorium on data center construction. While no moratorium is currently in place, the commissioners are actively investigating its feasibility, noting that such a measure would need to originate from Area Planning. Residents view these actions as a positive step, indicating that their long-standing concerns, particularly regarding the County's Board, are finally being acknowledged.
