Gov: House Oversight Committee, Michigan State Capitol
The Michigan House Oversight Committee held a public comment hearing this morning at the State Capitol regarding data centers, where the topic was front and center. The overwhelming majority of those who spoke expressed strong opposition to data center development.
Public concerns primarily centered on the significant demands data centers place on resources. Speakers highlighted the large amounts of farmland, fresh water, and energy required for these facilities, as well as their potential impact on the environment. Marjorie Steele, with the Economic Development Responsibility Alliance of Michigan, testified that her organization has spoken to people in over 30 communities, all of whom have organized local grassroots resistance against data centers.
Many participants at today's meeting urged state lawmakers to take action. A key demand from the public was the creation of a statewide moratorium on data center development in Michigan.
