Parental rights group to shed light on data centers for families, communities
The American Parents Coalition released a brief to help families evaluate proposed data centers and ask questions about community benefits, water use, energy costs and neighborhood impacts. The brief cites Loudoun County, Virginia, as an example of a jurisdiction that receives substantial tax revenue from data centers.
The American Parents Coalition published a “Lookout” brief intended to help families understand data center proposals and assess their potential effects on communities. Executive Director Alleigh Marré said parents should receive clear information from developers about community benefits, infrastructure investments, water use, energy sources and neighborhood compatibility.
The brief identifies water consumption and electricity costs as major concerns, distinguishing between older open-loop cooling systems that lose substantial water through evaporation and closed-loop systems that recycle water. It also points to Loudoun County, Virginia, where data centers reportedly generate a significant share of local government and property-tax revenue, while encouraging families to seek measurable commitments from developers.
