The Ohio House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill to create a commission tasked with studying the impacts of data centers across the Buckeye State. The commission's primary objective is to investigate the various effects of data centers on local communities and subsequently outline best practices for local decision-makers. Kyle Brooks, a member of the Ohio Township Association, voiced support for the bill, emphasizing the prevalence of "unknowns" surrounding data centers and the need for guidance for local subdivisions forced to make decisions today. He highlighted the importance of having representatives focused on big-picture items like operations, agriculture, and county government on the commission. The commission will comprise ten members: five appointed by the Speaker of the House, including members from both parties and experts on electricity, water, environmental impacts, and townships. The remaining five will be appointed by the President of the Senate, including experts on municipalities, public utilities, and economics, also with bipartisan representation. The bill now advances to the Senate, and if approved there and by the Governor, the commission will have six months to finalize its report. Brooks views this bill as a positive first step but urges a quicker pace for subsequent actions.
