The Charlotte City Council is nearing a vote on a proposed 150-day moratorium that would halt new data center applications. Deputy City Manager Alyson Craig clarified that the moratorium would not affect projects with full construction plans submitted before its enactment. During this period, an interdisciplinary team will research the environmental impacts and potential regulations for data centers.

The Charlotte City Council is moving closer to enacting a 150-day moratorium on new data center applications. During a committee meeting, Deputy City Manager Alyson Craig explained that the proposed halt would only apply to new submissions, exempting any projects for which a full set of construction plans has already been submitted before the moratorium takes effect.

The initiative aims to allow an interdisciplinary team, led by Charlotte's Office of Sustainability, to conduct research on the environmental and other impacts of data centers. This team, which will work alongside environmental consultants, includes city planners, representatives from Charlotte Water, the city attorney’s office, and Mecklenburg County Public Health.

The City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposed moratorium next week, on June 8.
