Bernie Sanders and AOC introduce bill calling for nationwide AI data center moratorium

Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have introduced legislation in Washington D.C. calling for a nationwide moratorium on the construction of new artificial intelligence (AI) data centers. The proposed construction halt is intended to provide an opportunity to develop comprehensive protections against various concerns, including environmental damage, potential health threats, escalating electricity costs, and job displacement. The push for this federal legislation follows a letter sent last December to Congress, signed by over 230 organizations across the country, advocating for a similar moratorium. Mitch Jones, Managing Director of Policy and Litigation for Food & Water Watch, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that political and community leaders have been unprepared for the rapid expansion of the AI data center industry. He asserted that a pause is necessary until a robust regulatory framework can be established to safeguard people and the environment. Food & Water Watch recently published a report concluding that nothing less than a halt to data center rollout is sufficient until regulations ensure that technological advancements benefit everyone, not just a select few. Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez are being commended for their leadership on this critical issue at the federal level, with advocates urging Congress to swiftly support and pass the legislation.
