Teresa Sorenson, who has lived in the area for over three decades, described a persistent low hum that permeates her home, intensifying to a level that makes conversation impossible outdoors when the generators activate. She also expressed concerns about rising property taxes and the future salability of her home.
Another long-term resident, Alan Smith, echoed Sorenson's complaints, detailing sleepless nights due to the noise and observing emissions from the generators. He also noted the height of the data center buildings obstructing views. Steve Ready, another neighbor, shared similar experiences of generators running early in the morning.
Aligned Data Centers stated that its backup generators are housed in sound-reducing enclosures and are primarily used for maintenance or emergencies. However, residents like Ready claim the generators run frequently at random times. The neighbors are urging others in Utah to pay close attention to proposed data center developments early in the process, advocating for informed community involvement before construction begins.
