Tysons, Virginia-based Shumate Engineering has received a U.S. utility patent covering the operational functionality of its Hybrid-Dry/Adiabatic-Cooling system. The company says the closed-loop technology supports both conventional air-cooled servers and direct-to-chip liquid cooling, switching between dry, economizer and evaporative modes based on outdoor conditions.

Shumate estimates that the system can cut water consumption by 93%, cooling power use by 50% and total site power by 15% compared with conventional cooling systems. The technology was co-invented by company engineers R. Stephen Spinazzola and Justin Penrod, and Shumate says it is being used across 16 data center projects planned this year in Texas, Missouri and Arizona.
