Amazon has confirmed its financial backing for a massive private gas power plant in Pecos County, Texas, intended to power new data center campuses. The facility, known as GW Ranch and developed by Pacifico Energy, is projected to have 35 turbines and generate 7.65 gigawatts, potentially becoming the largest single source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, permitted to emit over 30 million metric tonnes annually.
According to Amazon, this on-site power generation strategy aims to avoid passing electricity costs to Texas consumers, whose bills have surged due to new infrastructure supporting the AI boom. The company plans for the plant to transition to grid-connected service when feasible and is exploring opportunities for on-site solar energy, battery storage, and the use of non-potable, brackish groundwater to minimize watershed pressure. Amazon reiterated its commitment to The Climate Pledge, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
This move exemplifies a growing trend among tech giants, including xAI, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle, to develop "behind-the-meter" power solutions to rapidly bring AI operations online. However, critics note that these private plants often utilize less efficient and more polluting equipment than traditional utilities, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, methane leaks, and the release of fine particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and hazardous air pollutants associated with various health issues.
