News ClipMissoula Current·Bonner, Missoula County, MT·4/22/2026
Missoula County is scrutinizing a proposed data center in Bonner by Krambu, which must comply with county zoning requiring 100% new renewable energy and secure a special exception due to its proximity to a residential area. County officials are evaluating how Krambu plans to meet the energy requirements, as a formal compliance proposal has not yet been submitted. The project will test the clarity and strength of the county's existing regulatory framework.

Missoula County is closely examining a proposed data center in Bonner by Idaho-based company Krambu, which is expected to challenge the county's existing zoning and regulatory requirements. The data center, planned for a former mill site, needs to secure 100% new renewable energy to offset its consumption, a rule adopted by the county about seven years ago for crypto mining and data centers.
Svein Newman, the county's climate action program manager, clarified that Krambu must demonstrate their actions introduce *new* renewable energy to the grid. While the company is aware of the requirement, they have not yet submitted a formal proposal detailing their compliance path, which could involve building their own renewable source or entering a power purchase agreement with a new renewable energy operator. Existing renewable sources like hydro or wind farms would not qualify.
Additionally, the project is located within 500 feet of a residential neighborhood, prompting Krambu to request a special exception from the county. The Consolidated Land Use Board is scheduled to review this request in the coming weeks. County officials, including planner Jennie Dixon, noted that this is the furthest any data center proposal has progressed in the county's review process, and it will serve as a significant test for the enforcement and clarity of their zoning and energy policies.
