Southern Nevada weighs Switch data center plan in North Las Vegas, Nye County project falters
Southern Nevada is seeing divergent paths for two data center proposals: Switch is moving forward with a new project in North Las Vegas, emphasizing sustainable designs. Concurrently, the Manse Technology Campus project in Nye County is stalled due to a county-approved data center ban, prompting legal challenges.
Two significant data center proposals in Southern Nevada are facing different outcomes. In North Las Vegas, Switch is proposing a new data center within the Apex Industrial Park, near Apex Power Parkway and U.S. 93. Switch, which has operated data centers in the region for over 25 years, highlighted its commitment to sustainability, stating its designs have been 100-percent renewable for a decade and achieve zero water consumption in its EVO data center designs since 2022. Phase 1 of the project includes two data center buildings and other structures on 175 acres, and the proposal is currently under review by North Las Vegas City Hall, with Councilman Isaac Barron noting the Apex Act's role in overseeing development.
Conversely, the Manse Technology Campus proposal in Nye County has stalled significantly. This occurred after the Nye County Commission approved a data center ban several weeks ago. The legal team representing Manse asserts that the company complied with initial zoning laws and made substantial investments, which they claim were disregarded by the county's retroactive rule changes. Nye County Commissioner Ian Bayne, District 3, contended that the original zoning for Manse was improper due to an existing moratorium, suggesting that Manse proceeded in defiance of this. Legal actions regarding the Manse Technology Campus and the timeline for the Switch data center at Apex are both ongoing.
