Hanover Humane Society says data center noise is hurting rescue dogs
The Hanover Humane Society says construction noise from an adjacent data center in Ashland is reaching 80 to 85 decibels and causing distress for rescue dogs. The society is opposing Opden Investment Company's proposal for two nearby warehouses because of expected heavy truck traffic and additional noise, and plans to raise its concerns with county officials and the developer.
The Hanover Humane Society says ongoing construction at Opden Investment Company's nearby data center has made the area around its adoption center too noisy for the rescue dogs. Executive representative Andrew Payne said noise levels typically reach 80 to 85 decibels, which he believes can cause pain and behavioral problems for the animals.
The organization is especially concerned about Opden's proposal to build two larger warehouses nearby, with heavy commercial trucks using a road close to the humane society's property. Opden said it recognizes the need for a calm environment and has offered to build a fence along the shared property line to reduce noise. The warehouses require Hanover County approval, and the humane society plans to speak at an Ashland Town Hall meeting and meet with the developer before a community meeting.
