Trustees to consider data center moratorium June 9
The Buena Vista Board of Trustees will discuss a proposed six-month moratorium on new data center applications on June 9. If approved, the moratorium would cover principal-use data centers like cloud computing and cryptocurrency mining facilities. This discussion follows earlier talks by the town's Planning and Zoning Commission on regulating data centers.
On June 9, the Buena Vista Board of Trustees is set to discuss a proposed six-month moratorium on the acceptance, processing, and approval of applications for new data centers within town limits. The emergency ordinance, No. 2026-13, would temporarily halt the development of principal-use data centers, specifically targeting facilities associated with cloud computing, artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency mining, and colocation services.
Planning Director Marika Kopp outlined the scope of the proposed moratorium in a memo to the trustees, noting that accessory server or networking equipment supporting an otherwise permitted primary use would not be subject to the ban. The moratorium, if enacted, would last at least until December 9. The town's Planning and Zoning Commission previously initiated discussions last month on how to regulate data centers, leading to the current proposal. The meeting will also address drought preparedness and updates from a short-term rental committee.
