The Clay County Board of Supervisors has once again postponed a decision on whether to implement temporary moratoriums on data centers, wind energy, solar energy, and battery energy storage systems. During a recent meeting, Planning and Zoning Consultant Steve Hallgren, who attended a webinar on data centers, presented to the board.

Supervisor Allen Batschelet highlighted that only a few Iowa counties have enacted similar moratoriums and stressed the importance of thoroughly understanding both the benefits and drawbacks before proceeding. Hallgren clarified that current county zoning regulations would primarily review proposed data centers for basic compliance.

Following discussion, the supervisors concluded that additional information is necessary before taking action. Hallgren is tasked with gathering data and examples from other county and local governments to inform a future workshop where supervisors can further evaluate the potential impacts and benefits of these industries.
