Franklin County votes to allow data center development

Franklin County commissioners voted unanimously to approve rezoning two properties from agricultural to industrial use, paving the way for data center developments at Diamond Farm in Villa Ridge and Crooked Creek Farm, south of Pacific. The decision followed a heated public meeting where residents packed the room to voice their frustration and concerns.

Opponents raised issues about the potential impact on animals and the environment, as well as the proximity of the proposed data centers to two elementary schools. They highlighted fears that infrasound vibrations could affect children's learning, and expressed significant concerns about noise, natural resource depletion, and the enormous electricity demands of the facilities. Despite hours of public comment detailing these issues, the commissioners proceeded with the unanimous vote, leading to angry outbursts from residents who accused the officials of ignoring their voices and violating their oath of office. Following the vote, police intervened as a reporter attempted to get answers from a commissioner. Opponents stated that their fight against the projects may not be over.
