West Virginia leaders propose plan to use data center revenue for tax reduction

Data centers aren't something communities should automatically fear. They could represent an enormous economic opportunity. West Virginia leaders are pushing a plan that would dedicate 50% of revenue generated by data center projects toward reducing, and eventually eliminating, income taxes. That's the kind of conversation communities should be having. Instead of paying companies massive incentives to locate somewhere, make data centers buy into the community. Establish guardrails, address legitimate infrastructure concerns, and negotiate from a position of strength. The argument here is simple: Data centers can generate significant tax revenue without requiring communities to chase them with incentives. And while other cities and counties are panicking, communities willing to negotiate could have an opportunity to get an even better deal. Take advantage of it while everyone else is saying no.
