South Georgia is experiencing a rise in data center development, prompting discussions about the region's water resources. While the Floridan Aquifer, a major underground system beneath South Georgia, is described as a "first-class aquifer" with clean and plentiful water, experts highlight the importance of understanding and managing this resource carefully due to fluctuating supply and periods of drought.

Todd Rasmussen, a long-time researcher of Georgia's water, explains that the region's rainwater filters underground to replenish the aquifer much faster than in most other parts of the country. He compares the aquifer to a savings account, with deposits during rainy seasons and withdrawals during dry spells. Rasmussen emphasizes that managing the aquifer involves minimizing impact by understanding the recharge process and water flow underground.

Mark Masters, who leads the Georgia Water Planning and Policy Center at Albany State, notes that state researchers have spent years tracking water deposits and withdrawals. This extensive database aims to monitor who is using water and how to ensure the sustainability of South Georgia's vital water supply amidst industrial growth.
