Stokes planning board backs pause on data center development
The Stokes County Planning Board has recommended a six-month moratorium on data center development, citing environmental and safety concerns. This proposed pause would likely impact Project Delta, a controversial hyperscale data center in Walnut Cove. County commissioners are set to vote on the recommendation.
The Stokes County Planning Board has voted 6-1 to recommend a six-month moratorium on data center development. This recommendation stems from concerns raised by residents regarding potential environmental and safety impacts, and is intended to provide the county with more time to study these issues.
The proposed moratorium is expected to affect Project Delta, a contentious hyperscale data center planned for Walnut Cove. Earlier this year, the Stokes County Commissioners approved a zoning change for Project Delta, overriding a planning board recommendation, but this approval was later voided following a legal challenge. The developer is currently reapplying for the project.
The final decision on the moratorium rests with the Stokes County Commissioners, who are scheduled to consider the planning board's recommendation at their Monday meeting.
