Iowa scientists and sustainability scholars have issued their 2026 Iowa climate statement, declaring the state is at a "fork in the road" concerning power generation. The statement, signed by over 180 experts from various universities and organizations, urges Iowans to champion renewable energy systems to meet surging electricity demand, driven in part by the "proliferation" of data centers across the state. They advocate for a system primarily powered by wind and solar, supplemented by reliable carbon-free sources like nuclear energy, over expanding fossil-fuel-generated plants.

University of Iowa Professor Jacqueline Dowling and Drake University Professor David Courard-Hauri highlighted the urgency of this choice during a virtual news conference. Courard-Hauri stressed that the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and data center expansion make this a "critical time" to shape Iowa's energy future. He questioned whether the state would continue its renewable energy path or revert to fossil fuels, citing climate and health risks, along with price volatility.

The scientists referenced a recent report by the Iowa Environmental Council, which found an uptick in coal-generated energy in 2025, counter to carbon-neutral goals. While utilities acknowledge these goals, they point to the complex challenges of balancing reliability, consumer costs, and sustainability. The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO), serving 15 states including Iowa, forecasted a 38% increase in peak demand by 2044, attributing this surge largely to artificial intelligence and data center growth, alongside electric vehicles and building electrification.

Dowling noted that Iowa, a leading state in renewable energy, had adopted "visionary policies" two decades ago. She emphasized the health, affordability, and climate benefits of a continued transition to wind and solar. Additionally, she pointed out that the Duane Arnold Energy Center, a previously shuttered nuclear plant in Linn County, is being restarted with U.S. Department of Energy support, with over 90% of its generated energy allocated to Google's expanding data center operations in Iowa. Utilities are also constructing new natural gas plants as part of an "all of the above strategy" to meet anticipated demand.
