Protests are escalating against Sabey Data Centers LLC's ambitious $4 billion, 250-megawatt data center proposal in Decatur Township, Marion County, Indiana. The Metropolitan Development Commission is scheduled to vote on the million-square-foot project, which is situated on 130 acres and plans to utilize a closed-loop water system. This project does not require a full rezoning as the land is already zoned for industrial use, distinguishing it from a previously defeated Google data center project in Franklin.
City-County Councilor Josh Bain expressed optimism for the project's approval, emphasizing the substantial increase in projected tax revenue from $16,000 to $22 million annually, and the creation of hundreds of construction jobs and over 100 long-term positions. He noted the absence of local data center ordinances, a matter the city is reportedly addressing. Bain also shared his positive impression of a Sabey facility he visited in Texas, reporting no noise issues and aiming to ensure well water is not used.
However, the proposal has encountered significant pushback from local residents. Ashley Hooley, who lives a mile from the proposed site, voiced concerns about potential light pollution during the four-year construction phase and its impact on their residential area, as well as the possibility of decreased property values. Conversely, some local business owners, like Carl Davis of DC BarberShop, are optimistic about the project, anticipating increased foot traffic and economic growth for the community.
