A University of Memphis study examined the environmental impact of XAI's Colossus One data center in Southwest Memphis. The study found no significant air quality drop or temperature increase but estimated the data center emits tens of tons of various air pollutants annually. Researchers called for more field air monitoring and health research due to a lack of local health data.

A new study conducted by the University of Memphis has investigated the environmental effects of XAI's Colossus One data center located in Southwest Memphis. The research specifically focused on the facility's impact on air quality and surface temperature in adjacent neighborhoods, including Boxtown and Riverview.

The study's findings indicated no significant decrease in air quality or increase in surface temperature in the immediate vicinity of the data center. However, researchers estimated that Colossus One contributes substantially to air pollution, annually emitting tens of tons of various pollutants. These include carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and over 80 tons of volatile organic compounds.

Despite these emission estimates, the research team reported an inability to conclusively determine the data center's impact on community health due to an absence of comprehensive local health data. Consequently, the University of Memphis team is advocating for increased field air monitoring and dedicated health research initiatives within Southwest Memphis to better understand and address these environmental considerations.
