Jackson State University’s Mississippi Urban Research Center held a community forum in Jackson to discuss the effects of data centers. Researchers said there are 17 data centers in the Jackson metropolitan area and 24 statewide, and raised concerns about potential air pollution and related respiratory, neurological and cardiovascular health effects.

Panelists also discussed the large amounts of water used to cool data center systems and the potential impact on public water supplies. Community members called for greater protections and clarity, while JSU officials said data centers can generate tax revenue for schools, infrastructure and health care, as well as create jobs and support wage growth.
