Environmental Group Expresses Concern Over Proposed Data Centers in Southwestern Pennsylvania

Debra Smit, communications director of The Breathe Project, an environmental advocacy group based in Pittsburgh, has expressed concerns regarding the increasing number of data center proposals across southwestern Pennsylvania. The organization, which monitors environmental issues and air quality in the region, notes that approximately 80 new data center projects have been proposed statewide. Smit emphasizes that these developments are becoming "flash points" for public opposition due to their potential environmental impact.
Smit specifically cited potential locations in Washington County, including the Zediker Station tract owned by CNX in South Strabane and a 153-acre site in Starpointe Business Park in Hanover Township. Another contentious proposal is in Homer City, Indiana County. She warned that "diesel data centers" would contribute to air quality degradation, increased water consumption, and noise pollution, impacting environmental health.
The Breathe Project's director also raised broader concerns about power grid strain and the reliance on fossil fuels to power these facilities in Western Pennsylvania, arguing against the overextension of data centers in counties like Allegheny, Westmoreland, Beaver, and Washington. The organization advocates for a transition to renewable energy sources, especially in light of increasing wildfire incidents linked to global warming and fossil fuel dependency.
