Alton Steel data center open house today
Terrawatt is considering developing the Riverbend Technology Center data center on nearly 400 acres at the former Alton Steel mill site in Alton. The company has not yet submitted rezoning or permit applications, while some residents question whether the project would replace the steel mill’s employment base.
Terrawatt is considering purchasing and redeveloping nearly 400 acres at the former Alton Steel mill in Alton, Illinois, as the Riverbend Technology Center data center. Alton city leaders said the company has contacted the city, but it has not submitted a rezoning request or permit applications. Alton Steel officials recently said they were close to selling the property to Terrawatt.
Terrawatt says the proposed facility would use 99.8% less water, emit 81% fewer pollutants and be 48 decibels quieter than the steel mill at peak operations. The company also says it would not seek local tax incentives, instead pursuing state assistance. Some residents remain skeptical, expressing concern that the data center would create far fewer jobs than the former steel mill. An open house was scheduled at the Wedge Innovation Center to present the proposal.
