Councilmembers Will Jawando and Kristin Mink have introduced a bill proposing a two-year moratorium on new data center development in Montgomery County, Maryland. This action comes shortly after Councilmember Evan Glass called for a six-month pause on such projects.
Jawando clarified that the bill does not aim to outright reject data centers but to ensure their development is handled correctly. During the proposed two-year halt, he believes the county needs to update its noise ordinance, confirm sufficient renewable energy availability to power these facilities, adjust the tax code, and seek support from the state legislature. Mink also stressed the importance of understanding potential impacts and establishing clear boundaries before proceeding with developments like the proposed Dickerson data complex center. Both councilmembers emphasized the irreversible consequences of proceeding without adequate safeguards, citing concerns about watershed pollution and increased electricity costs.
