Speakers pack Town Hall to oppose any hint of a data center
The Sahuarita Town Council meeting was packed with over 25 speakers who primarily expressed strong opposition to any potential data center developments in the area. All 23 speakers focused solely on data centers were against them. The public comments lasted nearly 90 minutes, indicating significant community concern.
The Sahuarita Town Council experienced a packed house during its Monday night meeting as more than 25 residents spoke for nearly 90 minutes, predominantly focusing on their strong opposition to data centers. Reverend Randy Mayer initiated the public comment section, addressing the council about community concerns regarding data center development.
All 23 speakers who specifically addressed data centers voiced their disapproval. Additionally, a representative from "Save the Scenic Santa Ritas" included data center opposition in her comments, which also covered the Hudbay Minerals' Copper World mine complex. Several attendees wearing "Stop Copper World" shirts also used their allotted three minutes to express opposition to data centers.
Separately, the council approved a new fee structure for business applications, potentially generating $70,000 for a "business buddy" position, with Vice Mayor Kara Egbert and Council Member Steven Gillespie opposing. An ordinance to amend zoning for marijuana dispensaries was defeated in a 3-3 vote, and the council approved a consent agenda item for police vehicle equipment and an amendment to the solid waste contract with Waste Connections of Arizona, neither of which increased residential rates.
