Gov. Wes Moore’s new executive order on data centers aims to put Maryland in the middle of a fast-growing national debate over artificial intelligence, utility costs, environmental protections, and economic development.
The Wednesday order creates a state task force to review large proposed data centers that use at least 25 megawatts of power when they seek a state permit, inventive, or letter of support. The executive order also creates a public dashboard meant to disclose a project’s developer, location, projected electricity and water use, requested state actions, and the state’s findings.
