Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller is advocating for a temporary moratorium on AI data center development across the state. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has urged state leaders to enact a temporary moratorium on artificial intelligence (AI) data center development across Texas. Citing a rapid boom in such facilities, Miller expressed significant concerns regarding their long-term environmental and community impacts.

In a statement, Commissioner Miller argued that the state is approving new data centers too quickly without a comprehensive understanding of their effects on productive farmland, electricity demand, and water resources. He specifically questioned the capacity of the electric grid and the power consumption of these centers, as well as whether facilities generating their own electricity would contribute back to the grid.

Miller indicated that the primary purpose of a moratorium would be to provide essential time for research and planning to address these critical questions. He highlighted challenges already facing Texas communities, such as Abilene, where rising property values and rental costs are believed to be linked to the industry's expansion. Miller stated that approximately "80% of the people are against the data centers now" due to their perceived negative impact on communities.
