Bitcoin mining data center trying to build near Somerville
A Bitcoin mining data center, Sovereign Gazelle, is attempting to build near Somerville, Alabama, but is facing significant opposition from local residents who are refusing to sell necessary utility rights-of-way. The area's lack of zoning regulations is a key factor, leading to concerns about the project's impact on the rural community and its environment. Local government officials acknowledge the residents' concerns and the challenges presented by the absence of zoning.
Sovereign Gazelle, a Bitcoin mining data center company incorporated in April and led by Kevin Mohan (also associated with Big Star Blockchain), plans to establish a facility on a 15-acre property near Somerville, Alabama. The project, located in Morgan County, requires approximately 50 megawatts of power, necessitating new utility lines and easements from four local residents on Union Road.
Residents, including Lyndsey Hutson and Parthina Morrow, are actively opposing the development, citing concerns over noise, disruption to their peace, and the environmental impact on family farms. They have refused to sell the required parcels for utility rights-of-way, despite offers from Sovereign Gazelle that included cash payments, fiber service, and gas line construction. This refusal is currently stalling the project's progress, as the local utility provider, Joe Wheeler EMC, is obligated to provide service to compliant customers but cannot proceed without the easements.
Morgan County Commission Chairman Ray Long and Somerville Mayor Darren Tucker both acknowledged the significant resident opposition. They noted the lack of zoning regulations in both the unincorporated county and the town of Somerville, which complicates efforts to control such developments. Both officials also indicated that their respective government bodies would likely not grant abatements to data centers due to their low job creation and high potential for disruption. The situation in Somerville mirrors a broader national trend of communities pushing back against data center developments over quality-of-life and environmental concerns.
