Nvidia May Help OpenAI Open Data Center in Ohio
Nvidia is reportedly in talks to provide significant financing to OpenAI to help establish a data center in Ohio. The deal, which could involve up to $250 billion in backstopping, raises concerns about circular financing given OpenAI's status as an Nvidia customer. However, some analysts view such financing as constructive for the data center industry.
Bloomberg is reporting that Nvidia is in talks to provide substantial financing to OpenAI for a new data center in Ohio. Sources indicate that the chipmaker could backstop up to $250 billion, primarily to guarantee leases, while also assisting OpenAI in financing $350 billion worth of Nvidia chip purchases. This aggregated sum of money essentially positions Nvidia as a key financial backer for its major customer.
The potential deal has sparked concerns regarding "circular financing" and skewed incentives, as Nvidia is helping finance a customer who then purchases its products. Bloomberg's Ed Ludlow highlighted these concerns during a discussion, noting the unique nature of Nvidia acting as a bank for its clients.
However, not all analysts view this arrangement negatively. Bloomberg Intelligence, for example, considers such financing constructive for the data center sector. They argue that Nvidia's involvement instills confidence, making banks more willing to lend and ultimately expediting project development.
When previously questioned about similar financing arrangements, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has stated that the company does not contractually obligate recipients to use the financing specifically for Nvidia gear. In the context of the Ohio deal, details about the direction of funding remain unconfirmed as Nvidia and other parties did not respond to requests for comment.
