This project leverages advanced drilling techniques to create geothermal reservoirs, with an eye towards fueling the growing demand from data centers. Fervo Energy is developing its Cape Station enhanced geothermal project in Milford, Utah, with the goal of generating gigawatts of emissions-free, baseload electricity by harnessing heat from the Earth's core. The company employs advanced drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques, refined from the oil and gas industry, to create its own geothermal reservoirs.

The Cape Station project, situated near the Department of Energy's Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (Forge) in Beaver County, is set to achieve commercial operation next month. This milestone would make it the first enhanced geothermal system in the U.S. to reach this stage. CEO Tim Latimer noted a "step change in performance for geothermal drilling," with the company successfully reducing drilling times and costs.

Fervo's long-term vision includes making geothermal power cost-competitive and scalable, envisioning the possibility of installing plants "behind-the-meter" for data centers, which are significantly contributing to the rising U.S. power demand. The company has secured an off-take agreement with Google, contributing to approximately 1 GW of contracted power, and also has agreements with Southern California Edison, Shell Energy, and NV Energy.

Following a nearly $2 billion IPO in May, Fervo Energy plans to use the capital to expand its projects across the Western U.S. and eventually globally, with the aim of creating a more reliable, affordable, and sustainable electric grid.
