The City of Fort Wayne, Indiana, is finalizing a partnership with Google to implement a significant water conservation project. This $1.1 million initiative at the Three Rivers Water Filtration Plant is projected to save 182 million gallons of water each year by increasing efficiency and lowering operational costs.
The project involves installing smart sensors at the plant to measure sludge thickness and facilitate water recycling. Liz Schwab, a development manager with Google's Data Center team, confirmed that Google is monitoring water usage in Fort Wayne as part of its commitment to replenish 120% of the water it uses globally by 2030, noting that water is essential for efficient data center cooling. Fort Wayne has also presented a second proposal to Google for 2026, targeting the lining of municipal water mains to address underground leaks.
