The Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission voted 6-2 to approve a controversial data center project by Metro Blocks in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood, near the intersection of Sherman and 25th Street. Residents expressed significant frustration and upset following the two-hour meeting, having continuously pushed back against the development. Their primary concerns revolve around the environmental impacts and water usage associated with the data center, slated for a 14-acre site.
Metro Blocks CEO Ernest Popescu, however, expressed hope for unity and collaboration with the community, emphasizing the project as a long-term investment. He stated that the company has reviewed all environmental studies and deems them satisfactory. City County Councilor Ron Gibson, a supporter of the proposal, was also in attendance and reiterated his backing for the project.
While the vote appears to be a "done deal" regarding the specific rezoning appeal, residents anticipate further legal challenges or appeals to continue their fight against the development. There is currently no timetable for construction commencement, as several additional hearings and approvals are still required.
