Congressional Candidate Tim Cywinski: There Can't Be Affordability with Mass Data Center Production
Congressional Candidate Tim Cywinski argues against mass data center production, stating it's incompatible with affordability and justice. He advocates for a moratorium due to concerns about increased electric bills, water usage, and the tech industry's lobbying against state regulation. Cywinski also vows to hold tech companies accountable and prevent bailouts.
Congressional Candidate Tim Cywinski, who also serves as the communications director and community organizer for the Sierra Club Virginia chapter, has been actively campaigning against data center proliferation for three years. He asserts that the growth of data centers is fundamentally incompatible with affordability and justice, arguing that the issue transcends environmental concerns to impact democracy itself by disproportionately amplifying moneyed interests.
Cywinski explicitly called for a "damn moratorium" on data centers, challenging the industry to prove its intelligence by developing without negative trade-offs such as rising electric bills, increased water consumption, or adverse health effects on residents. He attributed the lack of common-sense regulation to financial influence, claiming that "Big Tech" spends $226,000 daily lobbying the federal government. This lobbying, he stated, aims to remove states' ability to regulate AI development and secure a bailout when the tech bubble inevitably bursts.
Emphasizing the existing affordability crisis, Cywinski warned that unchecked data center expansion would exacerbate the situation. He concluded by committing to never support a bailout for tech companies and to hold them accountable.
