The city of Wisconsin Rapids has postponed a scheduled vote by its planning committee on a proposed data center. The hearing, where the committee was expected to vote on the data center proposal, was put on hold to allow the city more time to gather information, consult professionals, and better inform its citizens about the project. Mayor Matt Zacher spoke on the development, stating that the city favors the structure of a conditional use permit for the former paper mill site. He emphasized that the data center would be considered within specific guidelines, particularly concerning environmental impacts. These conditions would address how water is treated, what substances can be discharged, and the pre-treatment required before any water enters the city's system, ensuring the rules are followed to protect the environment and community. Zacher highlighted the old mill site's suitability due to an existing wastewater treatment plant and access to city water, which would prevent discharge into the Wisconsin River. He also noted that the data center's power supply would come from a separate utility company, distinct from the one serving citizens. A public hearing or planning committee vote is not anticipated before early June.
