Matt Huckleby: Don’t ignore the politics behind data center protests
Matt Huckleby argues that legitimate concerns about data center impacts, including electricity rates, water use, noise and infrastructure, are being amplified by political groups and foreign influence operations. He urges Indiana Republicans to support data center development while addressing community concerns through state and local policies.
Matt Huckleby, vice president of MO Strategies and a former executive director of the Indiana Republican Party, argues that opposition to data centers is being shaped by broader political campaigns. He acknowledges concerns about electricity costs, grid reliability, water use, noise, setbacks and infrastructure, but says misinformation and foreign influence operations are exaggerating those issues.
Huckleby points to federal legislation introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez that would impose a moratorium on AI data-center development, as well as organizing by progressive and socialist groups. He contends that Indiana communities should negotiate reasonable safeguards while continuing to build the computing and energy infrastructure needed for artificial intelligence and national competitiveness.
